May 17, 2008 --
Saturday, May 17, the weather was nice with occasional light showers. We fished in deep water - mostly on jigs and caught mostly cod. We came inside and picked up a few more cod - all on bait. We had a total of 60 fish - cod and haddock - with a couple weighing in the teens and one in the high 20's.
Sunday, May 18th, again we had pleasant weather. Between drifting and anchoring on the inside spots in the mud we picked up about 30 fish. One in the high 20's and all on bait. There were about 27 boats in the area between recreational and party and all had mixed numbers and mixed fish. This coming Wednesday, May 21st, I intend to go to the inside spot where the big fish are. We currently have 7 anglers signed up, but could use a few more.
Saturday, May 24th we headed out with 18 anglers in great weather conditions. We drifted 8 miles off the beach in muddy bottom. We saw some good signs of fish on the bottom and for the next 2 hours we had fish coming aboard - mostly market cod. One 42-lb. steaker was brought up by Denise. After a couple of hours of up and down fishing, things died down. We left the area in search of fish and caught a 20 lb. catfish. We ended the day back in the same spot where we started out, topping the day off with a 52-lb cod among the 88 total fish for an excellent day with an excelent group.
Saturday, May 31st. I don't usually like to cancel trips, but it was a good thing we did - lots of wind and rain.
Sunday, June 1st. We had some leftover weather from Saturday which made the trip out a little difficult for our good friend, Bob Trottier and company. Bob has been bringing anglers aboard our vessel for 35 years. The seas settled down as predicted. 18 miles off the beach we found some deep water and started catching fish immediately. About 48-50 fish were brought aboard the boat - a mixture of cod and haddock. As the top of the tide approached, the fish stopped coming. We moved 9 miles to the East to Jeffrey's Ledge. A few moves later the tide and current started picking up along with the fish. We put another 50 fish aboard the boat. 50/50 cod and haddock and a few large pollack. The little fellow in the picture was a very intense, young fisherman. He caught 4-6 haddock by himself. The last words out of Bob Trottier's mouth were, "Hey, another nice trip." We ended up with 98 fish, including the captain's catch.
Tuesday, June 3rd - we had our first striped bass trip. Headed out around 10AM and caught about 50 small mackerel in 20 minutes. Prime bait. We fished hard and wide for 4 hours and came up with two throwbacks and one keeper.
Friday, June 6th - we headed out in calm seas and clearing skies. The weather called for a few AM showers and then clearing throughout the day. It poured all day!! We did catch fish though with our 15 skilled anglers aboard and came home with about 130 fish - a mix of cod and haddock.
Saturday, June 7th - great weather day, calm seas and great fishing. Bob and Ben were so busy taking fish off hooks they had no time for pictures. We ended the day with about 180 fish - again a mix of cod and haddock.
Wed. June 11th and Thurs. June 12 - both excellent weather and fish days. No big fish to speak of. An 11-lb haddock took the pool on Wednesday and an 9-lb. cod on Thursday. Wednesday's trip with 14 anglers returned with 234 fish - mostly haddock and Thursday's trip returned with 200 fish - mostly haddock as well. The haddock were biting on both jig and bait - it's unusual for haddock to go for a jig.
Mon. June 9th - Cool - Damp - Wet - wind out of the S 12-15K - Not very comfortable. Fishing was very slow at our first stop. The second stop proved differently - we ended with 134 fish: a couple of cod, couple of pollack and the rest haddock. The high hook for the day captured 20 fish.
Saturday, July 12th, we had 15 anglers expecting to run into a lot of dogfish. While heading out, with 4-5 miles to go, we saw some fish on the bottom. We stopped and drifted and started catching cod and haddock - a very good bite first thing in the morning. When we started catching dogfish, we moved another 5 miles out - very slow fishing at the new site. We headed back to our earlier spot later in the day and ended up with a total catch of between 175 and 180 fish. 70% haddock.
